Brandenburg
Brandenburg is one of the sixteen states of Germany that is densely forested and surrounds the capital city of Berlin. With its numerous lakes and forests it also has several trump cards of its own.
It lies in the east of the country and is one of the new federal states that were re-created in 1990 upon the reunification of the former West Germany and East Germany.
The former East German state of Brandenburg is home to historical towns, dreamy castles, country mansions and the exciting city of Berlin. Potsdam is the capital, whereas, other leading cities include Cottbus, Frankfurt-an-der-Oder, and Brandenburg.
Brandenburg city/town is in the north-east Germany, in Brandenburg State, on the Havel River near Berlin. It is an industrial centre, with shipyards and plants manufacturing textiles, tin plate, bicycles, paper, hosiery, and beer.
The City of Brandenburg is enclosed by walls and is made up of three sections, the Old Town, New Town, and Cathedral Town. The Cathedral Town is on an island in the Havel and is the site of the cathedral and of a medieval castle. In the Old Town, on the right bank of the river opposite the New Town, is the 14th-century town hall. In 948, the town became the seat of a bishopric.
Brandenburg City is an industrial center and rail junction. Manufactures include steel, machinery, and textiles. The city was founded as a Slavic settlement called Brennabor or Brennaburg. It was conquered in the 12th century by Albert the Bear.
Although the town of Brandenburg is less known than the state of Brandenburg, it provided the name for the medieval Bishopric of Brandenburg, the Margravate of Brandenburg, and the current state of Brandenburg. Many of the houses in the town are built on piles in the river.
There are five old Protestant churches, all more or less noteworthy. The most popular one is the 12th-century Romanesque church.
Of other buildings may be mentioned the former town hall of the Old Town, built in the 13th and 14th centuries, now used as 'government offices; the new Realgymnasium; and the town hall in the Neustadt, before which, in the market-place, stands a Rolandssaule, which is a colossal figure of 18 ft. in height, chiseled out of a single block of stone.
Brandenburg is also noted for its fortified walls and for the Katharinenkirche, a Gothic building dating from the 14th and 15th centuries.
A little north of the town is the Marienberg, or Harlungerberg, on which the heathen temple of Triglaff and afterwards the church and convent of St Mary were built.
The town has a considerable trade, with manufactures of woolens, silks, linens, hosiery and paper, as well as breweries, tanneries, boat-building and bicycle factories.
The City of Brandenburg has a population of 74,129 people approximately. This city situated in the wonderful state of Germany is a must see! Come, and visit this beautiful town along with your family and children and explore the different shades of past and present here!
