Bradford
Experience stunning architecture, cultural festivals and special events altogether in one city-Bradford. Visit from the extraordinary museums to the magnetizing galleries and you will know yourself why you should discover Bradford! Bradford is a city in West Yorkshire, England and is surrounded by several smaller settlements which together form the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford. Bradford has an estimated population of 293,717.
Economy
During the 19th century, Bradford was a boomtown of industrial revolution and emerged as an international center of textile manufacture. The city became the wool capital of the world and was considered amongst the earliest industrialized settlements.
The regions manufacturing base further strengthened when it was facilitated by the supply of coal, iron ore and soft water. The strong manufacturing base led to an increase in private investment as well as an explosion in population size.
However, later in the mid-20th century, the textile sector in the city fell into a critical decline. Since then, Bradford has experienced similar challenges and transitions to the post-industrial north, including economic deprivation, deindustrialisation, and housing issues.
Since the 1950s Bradford has undergone notable levels of immigration, particularly from Pakistan and India. Today, the city has the fourth largest population of Muslims in England and Wales. Since the downfall of heavy industry, Bradford has rose to prominence as a tourist destination with attractions such as the National Media Museum, Cartwright Hall, and Saltaire, the latter of which is a World Heritage Site.
Museums and art galleries
While exploring Bradford, you would like to pause at the citys several museums and galleries displaying exclusive items. Bradford features the most visited museum outside London - the National Media Museum, formerly called the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television. The National Media Museum garners attention for having three cinemas including a gigantic Imax screen.
Bradfords main art gallery is another excellent stopover which is stationed in the grand Edwardian Cartwright Hall. Bradford Industrial Museum is yet another significant museum in the region celebrating and explaining the major achievements in Bradfords industrial past, from textiles to the manufacture of motor cars.
Festivals
Several year-round successful activities, festivals and events take place in Bradford. The biggest of its kind festival is the Book Festival or the massive Bradford Mela, held in June each year. Another largest and prestigious festival attracting big names for the arts and entertainment in the north region is the Ilkley Literature Festival.
Also of interest are the several Continental Markets and Food Fairs, held throughout the city and district. The Bradford International Market is a four day all the rage spectacular held in August. However, Bradford is also known for its various film festivals organized by the National Media Museum. These include The Bradford Film Festival in March, Bite The Mango Film Festival in September, and the Bradford Animation Festival in November.
Theatre & Nightlife
Treat yourself to the vibrant performances, theater and eclectic events in the city. There are four main theatres in Bradford including The Alhambra, built in 1914, now owned by the Moss Empire group and revamped in 1986; The Studio, a smaller studio theatre in the same complex and both are operated by Bradford Council.
Third marks The Theatre in the Mill, a small studio theatre in the University of Bradford and last but not the least The Priestley Theatre, a privately run venue.
Also are there several theater companies promoting theater through different programs. Among the professional theatre companies, are Kala Sangam, the satirical madcap comedy troop, Komedy Kollective, Lost Dog and Mind the Gap. Mind the Gap is known for featuring a work by a mixture of disabled and able-bodied performers.
Bradford does have a luster for nightlife in the city. Since 2000, several clubs and pubs have opened in the area, around the Alhambra Theatre, making what was a fairly quiet area earlier one that is now crowded and raucous at night. A myriad of Indian and Pakistani restaurants catering for the most discerning curry tastes have also contributed notably to the nightlife scene.
Architecture
Bradford features state-of-the-art architecture and its both old and new buildings are evident of it. The Cathedral is one of the medieval buildings in the city but has been a perish church for most of its life.
Bolling Hall is another jewel in the ancient buildings and is preserved as a museum. The city also contains some fine collection of Victorian buildings such as the City Hall, the Wool Exchange, and a large Victorian cemetery at Undercliffe.
Like in many cities, a number of notable buildings have gone astray in 1960s and 1970s in the city. The Swan Arcade and the old Kirkgate Market are amongst those buildings. Also, in recent years some buildings from that era have themselves been demolished and substituted.
However, government is taking some significant steps for the restorations and construction of new buildings. Come and explore the majestic scale of Bradford, making it truly a marvelous spectacle!
