He envisioned a new village at the meeting of the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers and hired local merchant Joshua Whitney who built this city in a well-mannered way.

George F. Johnson is also an important name in Binghamton"s history. This local shoe manufacturer donated six beautiful carousels to local parks within Broome County that later earned Binghamton the title of "The Carousel Capitol Of The World."

Binghamton always remain in the limelight for its business and industrial opportunities, though the city gone through many good and hard times. In 1834, the same year when it incorporated, work began on the Chenango Canal that connected Binghamton with Utica in the south and the Erie Canal in the north.
