Bergamo is an extremely pretty old town in Lombardy, Italy, about 40km northeast if Milan. It is easily reached from Glasgow, London, Paris, Girona, Brussels, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Stockholm, turning it into an ideal short break destination.

With a medieval hilltop old town, Bergamo is well-preserved and is now home to Orio al Serio International Airport. Nearby is the Europes largest lake island, Lake Iseo.

The foothills of the Alps and the Valle Bremabana begin north of the City, while its small villages are noted for housing churches with medival frescoes and paintings. Bergamo is a home to the Academia Carrera that is said to be one of the best collections in Italy.

Bergamo occupies the site of the ancient town of Bergomum, which was destroyed by Attila in the 5th century. The town was ruled by Milan between 1264 and 1428, and passed to Venetian control until 1797.

The Venetians fortified the higher portion of the town and now this walled old town is well preserved. As of latest estimates, Bergamo has a total population of 120,000 inhabitants. The surrounding countryside is characterized distinctly for its beauty.

The region has a prominent place in music history which dates back to 1137, when a large Romanesque Church of S Maria Maggiore was built. The Church had a well-documented tradition of music teaching and singing for over eight hundred years.

The church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo is a lovely building, and more interesting than the neighbouring Duomo (cathedral), with a soaring skyline. With its octane dome, the Church saw many modifications over the centuries in its interior.

One of the Santa Maria Maggiore churchs most spectacular ornaments is a 1705 wooden confessional, carved by Andrea Fantoni. This hugely ornate extravagance looks rather like expensive sculpted chocolate.

The Accademia Carrara is yet another Bergamos most important tourist attraction, located outside the town wall on Via della Nuca. The towns 200-year-old art gallery puts up on display works by Botticelli, Bellini, Mantegna, Fra Angelico and many other masters.

The Accademia Carrara Art Galery in Bergamo also features special temporary exhibitions. The Art Gallery is just the beginning, there are lots of attractions waiting for you to explore them. Take a stroll through Citt? Bassa and you will get whisked away to explore its amenities and attractions.

Most visitors scurry through Bergamos lower, newer town on their way to the Citt? Alta. Pause here to enjoy a coffee along the Sentierone, the elongated piazza/street at the center of town. The region is brimmed with food shops and vendors offering a diverse variety of cuisine, satisfying your taste buds.

Try it, you would want to have it over and over! Also, noteworthy is the fact that the famous Valpolcia and Franciacorta wines are produced locally here.

During Venetian regime, a large instrumental ensemble grew up in Bergamo to support the choral singing. Gaetano Donizetti, Pietro Locatelli, and Antonio Lolli were some of the prominent singers born in Bergamo.

Also amongst the prominent figures of that time was Gasparo Alberti who produced polychoral music with two organs, brass and viols. This kind of music style was usually associated with Venice and it flourished in the fine acoustical environment of S Maria Maggiore.

Music lovers may find the Museo Donizettiano - Donizetti Museum a perfect place to enjoy the history of world famous music figures. It is located at Via Arena, 9.
