Located on the milestone as 109 miles from London via the A145 Blythburgh and A12 road, Beccles is a market town in the Waveney District of Suffolk, England.

The region derived its name from two parts of its present name; Beck, meaning by the stream, and leas, meadow by the stream. As of the US census 2001 estimates, Beccles had a population of 9,746 inhabitants.

Together with Worlingham in its suburbs, the combined population is estimated at 13,580. As far as the history of Beccles is concerned, many claim that it was the Romans who discovered the small hamlet of Beccles. The Romans sailed up River, and settled by the stream.

On the contrary, there"s a quarter of people who say that the ancient monks at Bury St Edmunds owned Beccles in the year 960. Records show that the people of Beccles panicked when Henry VIIIth dissolved the monastery in the 1500"s.

In 1540, William Rede went to London to obtain the lordship of the manor for the people of Beccles, and in 1605 the charter was further confirmed by James the 1st. In 1631, a free school was established by Sir John Leman in the town, where today the town"s most excellent Museum stands.

There was also a Beccles College in Ballygate which opened in 1877. The college later moved to Ashmans Hall in 1929. The original site of Beccles College became the Regal Cinema (formerly the Beccles Cinema Company).

Established in Newgate Street, on the corner of Gaol lane in the 1790"s was the Gaol or House of Correction. It consisted of rooms for 18 males, and 6 females for short term periods. In 1837 a Gas Works was built by James Malam in Pound Road, hence supplying 109 street lamps with the gasometer of 10,000 cubic feet.

It was not before 1844 that Beccles was recorded as a well built and improving Market Town. Reed Crisp became the town"s printer, later William Moore joined him.

In the early 1860"s the Railway had arrived in Beccles, and the today"s Station Road were formed. Also, at the turn of century, the whole Quayside of Beccles was filled with wooden logs. Beccles was an agricultural town during Victorian times.

Over the years, the region has developed its tourist industry, generating heavy revenues in food and restaurant industry. There"s n o shortage of activities and attractions when it comes to Beccles.
