Bautzen
Bautzen is a city in eastern Saxony, Germany, and capital of the eponymous district. It is located on the Spree River. As of 2005, its population is 42,189.
Bautzen is often regarded as the unofficial, but historical capital of Upper Lusatia, and it is the most important cultural center of the Sorbs, a Slavic minority.
A lot is there to see and experience in Bautzen. Above all, it is renowned for its historical town centre with its skyline of mediaeval towers. Bautzen is the centre of the Upper Lusatia.

Geographical Situation
The town on River Spree is situated about 50 kilometers east of Dresden between the Lusatian highland and the lowlands in the north, amidst the region of Upper Lusatia. Northwards stretches the Bautzen reservoir, which was flooded in 1974. This is the former place of the villages Malsitz and Nimschutz.
Expansion of the urban area
The old part of Bautzen is located on the plateau above the Spree, whose top is marked by the Ortenburg castle. It is bordered by the city walls. The later-built younger quarters in the east were enclosed by the city ramparts.
After their removal, the city expanded further east and to the left bank of the river. However, there is only a small urban area west of the Spree until today. In the 1970s, the development areas of Gesundbrunnen and Allendeviertel were erected. After 1990, several neighbouring villages got incorporated.
Historical Town Centre
Above all Bautzen is renowned for its historical town centre with its skyline of medieval towers. Among notable locations are The Reichenturm which is one of the steepest leaning and still passable towers north of the Alps, Ortenburg Castle that is an architectural monument and a museum and Saint Peter's Cathedral which is Germany's oldest and Eastern Germany's only historic interdenominational church edifice.
Bautzen is the most important cultural center of the Sorbs, which make up 10% of the city population. You will find many places of Sorbian culture importance in the city. As a result the city uses bi-lingual signs with street names both in German and Sorbian.
Kleinwelka is a subdivision of the city of Bautzen. There is the largest maze of Germany and a large Dinosaur-park.
The Sorbian museum has the characteristics of a national museum with collections of history, ethnography, literature, art, tours, exhibitions and lectures
Theatres
Sorbian folk theatre
It is the only binational theatre. Through the Sorbian folk theatre, the first occupational stage emerged in 1948. In 1963, the Sorbian theatre and the Bautzen Town Theatre amalgamated to Deutsch Sorbisches Volkstheater - Frontansicht become the German-Sorbian Folks Theatre.
After the closing-down and the demolition of the earlier theatre on the Lauengraben in 1975, the new theatre opened up where it is today. Theatre scenes in German and Sorbian, High and Nether-Sorbian scenes, as well as acts in other parts of the Lusatia.
Since 1996, there have also been successful open-air concerts such as the Bautzen Summer Theatre in the yard at the Ortenburg. A puppet theatre was added and it too does acts in both German and Sorbish.
Sorbian National Ensemble
It is an important professional folklore-ensemble with the Spartan Orchestra, choir and dancing. Due to many tournaments abroad, the Ensemble has been to over 40 different countries.
There are approximately 210 acts a year, half of them being in the Lusatia. Tours and extra acts for tour groups can be arranged.
