The city also offers the great educational facilities with two universities and many schools and colleges. The historical background refers to the time of the Roman period, having the typical Roman Baths' main spring was treated as a shrine by the Celts. It was a dedication to the goddess Sulis, whom the Romans identified with Minerva.
The earlier name of the town was Aquae Sulis, referring to that specific era. The city had been a center of importance, even after the end of the Roman era. It had seen the air raids in the World War II.
The damage to the city had been recovered and reconstructed, and regeneration work is still going on. The developments schemes have included the Bath Spa, South Gate and the Bath Western Riverside project, since the year of 2000.
