Barre
Barre is a beautiful city of the Washington County, being situated in the state of Vermont, in the United States. Barre City is surrounded by the Barre town, which has a separate identity from the city.
It has also been referred to as a twin city with Montpelier in local media and business groups. Barre itself is the largest city in Washington County, and is the third largest in the Vermont state.
Barre has been called the Granite Center of the World. It was established after the discovery of vast deposits of granite at Millstone Hill, right after the War of 1812. The city and the Granite industry had seen a great level of popularity, due to the development of the infrastructure, especially of the railway track.
According to the reports of the experts, the granite deposits have been spread over the area of 4 miles long, 2 miles wide and 10 miles deep. The information of the reserves had spread to many parts of the world, especially Europe and Canada, in a very short span of time.
Lots of people had migrated to Barre from Scotland, Spain, and Italy. The other places like the Scandinavian countries, Greece, Lebanon, Canada and many others had not lagged behind. The city is considered to share a great level of ethnic diversity, owing to the cultural backgrounds of people from variety of backgrounds.
The greatest contribution to the city, in terms of politics, culture and architecture had been brought about by the Italian immigrants. They had been the reason behind the radical, largely anarchist labor movement to Barre, due to their earlier associations with the Socialist Labor Party before affiliating with the Industrial Workers of the World.
They were the vital force, behind the election of mayor of Barre in 1916. Here you can still find the old Labor Hall of the radicals, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the year of 2000.
The granite of the place commonly known as the Barre Gray has been immensely popular worldwide, for its fine quality, even texture, and higher level of weather resistance. It is a much sought after material by the modern day sculptors, especially for the outdoor exhibits. Hope Cemetery in Barre is a fine example of the sculptors art.
The town of Barre, mainly belongs to the labor class, therefore the income level is medium or low in the area. But the sight of the city is a must watch, with lush green valleys, hills, streams, the granite reserves.
There are many festivals, happening around the whole year. The place offers some of the finest concert and movie theatres, shopping malls and other facilities of the modern life, to the visitors and local people.
