Baden
Baden is one of the famous historical states on the east bank of the Rhine River, in the southwest of Germany. The city has its historical traces, back to the 12th century as the Margraviate of Baden and later split into different lines, which were again unified in the year of 1771.
It had become a large state named Grand Duchy of Baden, due to the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1803-06 and remained as an independent country until the time of the joining of the German Empire in the year of 1871, but kept the status of a Grand Duchy.
It had become a part of the Weimar Republic as the Republic of Baden, in the year of 1918. Baden had a boundary in the north with the Kingdom of Bavaria and the Grand Duchy of Hessen-Darmstadt.
The whole area offers a scenic beauty, by being on the banks of the River Rhine; it has always served as a natural boundary by separating it from the Bavarian Rhenish Palatinate and Alsace in modern France.
It is linked with Switzerland on the south and to the east by the Kingdom of Wurttemberg, the Principality of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and partly by Bavaria. The French military government had created the state of Baden after World War II in the year of 1945, with Freiburg as capital.
This southern half of Baden had declared the independence in the year of 1947, with its own constitution, to be the true successor of the old Baden.
Later, the northern half of the old Baden was combined with northern Wurttemberg to form a part of the American military zone and helped in the creation of a new state of Wurttemberg-Baden. Both of the states had become a part of West Germany upon its formation in 1949.
Baden had merged with Wurttemberg-Baden and Wurttemberg-Hohenzollern In 1952, resulting in the formation of Baden-Wurttemberg. It has a historical significance in the history of Germany, being the only merger of states in the country.
The anthem of Baden which is called "Banderlied" had four or five traditional verses. There are up to 591 more verses, with the passage of have been added. The organization of educational institutes is in the total control of the government.
There are five universities, having their connection with the Protestant, Roman Catholic sects and there is a well-known technical university in Karlsruhe, too.
The town of Baden offers many historical monuments, the palaces, old wall and the ancient universities, along with the modern day tourism facilities.
The city and the surroundings of Baden have produced many geniuses and great names like Karl Benz, inventor of the gasoline-powered automobile; Karl Drais, inventor of velocipede, draisine, typewriter and stenograph machine , Steffi Graf, famous female tennis player; Friedrich Hecker, revolutionary; Oliver Kahn, Football player and many others.
