Aurora
The history of Aurora dates back to 1834, when Joseph and Samuel McCarty came west from New York to look for a site to build a Sawmill.
The two found the Fox River while an island at a bend in the river provided a great location to establish mills and factories since it was easier for them to harness water power from there. There were two separate settlements on either side of the Fox River.
In 1857, the two settlements were merged to form the town we know today as Aurora. Today, Aurora is enjoying a population resurgence and increased more than 40 percent between 1990 and 2000. As real estate prices go up in Chicagoland, Aurora us being seen as a market to be tapped.
Once home to a village of 500 Potawatomi Native Americans who traded peacefully with white settlers in the area, Auroras business industry continues to expand. Quickly after settled as a small town, Aurora developed into a manufacturing town.
At first, the region was known for textiles; however, it later developed its heavy manufacturing industry. Over a period of time, their heavy machinery, foundries, and machine shops progressed remarkably.
In 1849, the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad extended its line to Aurora, making railroad the regions largest employer. A large number of repair and railcar construction shops opened around that time. It remained Auroras largest employer until the 1960s.
Aurora is also characterized distinctly for being the first town in Illinois to light its streets with electric lights in 1881. This earned the City a moniker, The City of Lights. In the 1910s, the region was home for the six different automobile companies; later all of them failed eventually.
Aurora faced the worst natural disaster of its history on May 26, 1909 when it was hit by one of the strongest earthquakes. The intensity of the earthquake was felt over 500,000 square miles.
To rebuild infrastructure and to bring the life back to its normal, notable measure had been taken both on private and government level. Over the years, Aurora has strengthened itself by developing various industries that are drawing a large number of people in the region.
Today, there are plenty of attractions in Aurora to get hooked to them. The region offers ample opportunities to both locals and out-of-towners alike to live, work and play.
