Auburn Hills is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. According to US Census 2000 estimates, the city had a population of 19,837. The history of Auburn Hills dates back to 1983 when the now defunct Pontiac Township gave birth to this new city.

Auburn also houses the Great Lakes Crossing shopping center, as well as The Palace of Auburn Hills which is a home of both the National Basketball Associations Detroit Pistons and the Womens National Basketball Associations Detroit Shock. Culture & History
Auburn Hills is a community rich with history which dates back to about two centuries. Auburn Hills primarily recognized as the town of Auburn in 1821 at what is today the corner of Auburn and Squirrel Roads. Established near the Clinton River, it was named by Aaron Webster for Auburn, New York. Aaron Webster was the first settler in the town. His sawmill and grist mill drew many outsiders to Auburn.

In 1908, automobile pioneer John Dodge purchased a farmhouse 3 miles northeast of Auburn Heights which served as his country retreat. Auburn Heights and Pontiac Township together became the City of Auburn Hills in 1983. Auburn Hills were incorporated from Pontiac Township in 1983. Pedestrian- friendly development is encouraged in Auburn Hills.

The Civic Center property is home to many historical landmarks, now serving different purposes. After incorporation, administrators and workers moved into the new facility from the old town hall at 2060 Opdyke Road. What was once a barn and horse stables turned into the Citys Administrative Offices.

Since 1983 there have been modifications to the property and its buildings. As a result of the City various programs for preserving the buildings on the campus, Auburn Hills has been able to keep up its old fashioned charm. While the City is growing to meet the needs of its residents and businesses, Auburn Hills continues to strive to preserve the glory of its past.

The first use of the name Auburn Hills was made by Oakland Community College in 1964. They named their campus - which was once a Nike missile base - at Featherstone and Squirrel roads for the town and the hilly terrain in the region. Besides Oakland Community College, there are two other colleges as well including Oakland University, and Baker College. These colleges have their campuses partially within the town limits.

The city is home to a prosperous business community as it roughly follows the course of Interstate 75. In the early 1980s, Oakland University teamed up with developers to make the use of unused land the city owned. The University created a technology and research park with world-class amenities.

The Oakland Technology Park was approved by the city in 1985, with Comerica, EDS, and Chrysler to have campuses built there. Today, the regions many technology and office buildings cause its population to swell to 80,000 during the workday.

However, many areas of Auburn Hills still have a rural atmosphere, but land is being developed fast and is approaching modern ideas, technology and ways to be in race. The city offers both its dwellers and visitors ample opportunity to enjoy and treat themselves to its richness.
