Details of Attendorn and the Ticket Luck value
Germany has always attracted tourists because of its rich cultural heritage and long-lived traditions. Every old town of Germany has its history that fascinates visitors from within the country and from other nations as well.
Attendorn is one such city that invites all to explore its history through the lenses of its present glory. A German town in the Olpe district in North Rhine-Westphalia, Attendorn offers tourists a fulfilling and beautiful experience filled with many unforgettable moments.
Attendorn is located on the area where people settled as early as prehistoric times. Some significant settlements, however, can be traced only as far back as the Middle Ages. The town developed out of a village-like settlement located at the crossing of two long-distance roads.
An Early Parish was founded as early as the reign of Charlemagne. Attendorn got its official declaration as a town in 1222 by Engelbert I von Berg, who awarded it the Law of Soest. The town flourished a lot in the 13th and 14th centuries. Indeed, Attendorn was the only Sauerland town to join the Rhenish Confederation of 60 important towns of the empire in 1255. However, the towns wealth diminished in the late 15th century.
During the Napoleonic era, the town reached its lowest point from which it did not recover until the middle of the 19th century. Also, in the World War II, Attendorn suffered great destruction by bombs and a major ammunition explosion. But Attendorn bounced back all on its own.
The technical developments and the reconstruction after this destruction gave the city a new outer appearance, but the old feel and flair of the town has been preserved even today.
Today, Attendorn stands proud as an old but at the same time young town which is worthwhile to live in, and even more interesting to visit. The combination of its historical appeal and modern lifestyle enhance the importance of this place to a great extent. This aspect and the excellent recreational opportunities make up the good image of this town.
Attendorn is a picture perfect place thanks to its climate, soil and beautiful locales. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of local customs and colorful festivals. When Attendorn celebrates Carnival streets are filled with happy locals and joyful tourists. A traditional Parade that is being held on each Tuesday before Ash Wednesday for over 150 years now provides one-in-a-lifetime experience as people from the far and wide attend this parade.
Attendorn offers some of the best facilities and attractions for visitors and tourists. Your trip to Attendorn is incomplete without making a visit to Sauerl?nder Dom, the Romanesque tower from around 1200 and its Gothic nave dating back to the 14th century, the Hospital Church from the 14th century, two towers which used to form part of the towns defensive wall and other historic buildings that give testimony of the varied history of the town.
The former town hall of Attendorn is also worth-a-visit. Now a home to Sudsauerland museum, it is the only secular Gothic building still existing in southern Westphalia. The city also has the magnificent Atta Cave, the biggest and most scenic limestone cave with stalactite and stalagmites in Germany. This makes Attendorn the most popular destination for day trippers.
Around Attendorn lies Schnellenberg Castle, where the famous Westphalian Droste von Furstenberg family resided since 1594. The chapel and Waldenburg castle ruin are also notable. The latter is the oldest architectural monument and the administrative germ cell of the Olpe district that was restored with great ideal efforts and cost in recent years.
Recreational areas that attract us to Attendorn are the Biggesee with a campground and the beach at Waldenburger Bucht. The huge dam of this largest and most beautiful reservoir of the Sauerland is situated close to the town along with the Lister Reservoir and the Ahauser Reservoir.
