The Athens music scene gained momentum in the early 1970s with many regionally popular bands such as Ravenstone- also called One of the Godfathers of Athens Rock. Ravenstone is a product of the Allens. The original Allens is the oldest bar in Athens but was closed in 2003. However, it re-opened in 2007 at a new location presenting the flavors of same original recipes and commitment to live music.

Among other popular bands are Matthew Sweet, Perpetual Groove, Dreams So Real, Mercyland, Indigo Girls, The Method Actors, The Primates, Flat Duo Jets, Pylon, Love Tractor, Widespread Panic and Modern Skirts. The music scene in Athens continues to produce many revolutionary underground bands and artists that come up into the mainstream music community.

The town is also known to have such significant possessions as the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, famous Tree That Owns Itself-which now is an offspring of the original tree, and the University of Georgia Campus Arboretum. It is the only remaining one of two double barreled cannons produced during the American Civil War.

The Athens is also home to a well-known bar called The Globe. The Globe was voted as the third top bar in America in 2007 by Esquire magazine. The city was home to Network Translations, Inc., which produced the PIX firewall. PIX firewall was later purchased by Cisco Systems.

Athens also has a vibrant and rich literary scene. The town is home to an autonomous publishing body like Hill Street Press. In addition, among well-known authors are Deborah Blum and Edward Larson, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Reginald McKnight and Coleman Barks. Deborah Blum and Edward Larson have won Pulitzer Prize.

Bicycle Races-collectively known as the Twilight Series- is the most favorite activity among local attractions that enchants a large number of visitors every year. The city hosts these races every spring and Twilight Criterium is the most popular race. In addition to these races, Athens has an active bicycle culture. This bicycle event held last Friday of each month at Critical Mass and Courteous.

The annual Human Rights Festival has been contributing remarkably to bring many speakers and activists to Athens over the years, ranging from David Dellinger to Jesse Jackson.

Athens had its first Really Free Market as part of the May Day celebrations on April 28th, 2007. The event was organized by independent Athens and it has since become a well attended monthly event in the spring, summer, and fall.
