Andernach
Andernach is a name of a beautiful and historically significant town of the Germany. The town is located in the town of Mayen-Koblenz, in the Rhineland-Palatinate. The town has a population of over 30,000 inhabitants; it is situated on the left bank of river Rhine bank.
A few hundred meters downstream of Andernach the Rhine valley gets narrower from both sides, and forms the northern part of the legendary "Middle Rhine" stretch. The place had a significant importance in the Roman times too; the narrow passage was named as "Porta Antunnacensis".
It is a wonderful sight to see, a kind of arch, being formed by two hills, the "Krahnenberg" and the "Engwetter" on the right bank, very much near the wine village named Leutesdorf.
It is a general phenomenon, the different cities towns, and villages have a different dialect from others, Andernach has followed the same tradition, with its own local dialect. It has its roots to the Moselle Franconian language subgroup and very much different from High German with more than 2,000 years of age.
Andernach is definitely one of the oldest towns in Germany, which was founded by the Romans as "Antunnacum" in the 12 BC on an old Celtic settlement; the Roman name meant an unexplored town. It is very interesting to know that a "Bimillenary feast" was held in the year of 1988.
The town has a great appeal to the tourists, due to the charming medieval heritage, exists in the old town. Tourists are mostly interested the old monuments like "Round Tower", built in the year of 1453, the archiepiscopal castle ruins with a well-preserved keep, the remains of the town wall having several well-restored wall towers and two gates: the Rhine Gate, the Grain Gate, Coblencian Gate, which was originally called the "Castle Gate" in medieval and Renaissance times up to the 19th century.
The Catholic "St. Mary Assumption Parish Church" called as "Church of Our Lady" or "St. Mary's Cathedral" is the oldest historical monument in Andernach, with a history back to 11th century. The town palais "von der Leyen house", which is built in renaissance and baroque styles it now houses the town museum since 1936 and again since 1969.
There are some of the industrial plants, like a huge malt mill, a big steel-mill to produce cold formed tin plate, and some companies manufacturing cast iron products, medicine products, raw food materials, engines and engine parts.
There is an equal chance for the sight of the old industries, at the place like the "Old Crane," which is a 16th century stony land based tread wheel tower crane with the height of 29 feet, situated outside the town downstream close to the river bank of the old harbor.
An interesting fact about it is the continuous of wheel for 350 years, where two to four men were required to rotate the crane top by means of a huge double ended lever. The town has been extremely valuable in the past and present times, and of the great tourist attraction centers of Germany.
