Details of Alicante and the Ticket Luck value
Alicante
Alicante and it's wonderful boulevard with palm trees and shopping streets, is one of the most well-known towns along the Costa Blanca.
Known for its miles of sandy beaches, Alicante is a starting point for thousands of tourists every year. Famous for its excellent weather, the city invites you to take a trip along the coast or to the wonderful island of Tabarca.
Along the Alicante harbor you find beautiful long alleys for nice relaxing walks, enjoying the palm trees and the mild climate.
History
The first settlements in the area were centered around the slopes of mount Benacantil, occupied today by the castle of Santa Bárbara, which combined the privileges of being close to the sea yet offering the protection of being high above the surrounding land. Although no definite remains have been found, historians are sure that the Iberians fortified the hilltop.
Another settlement was located in the Benalúa area, where the Roman city of Lucentum was built, and the predecessor of the city of Alicante today. Others villages from the same period have been located at the Albufereta and in the Serra Grossa.
In the 18th century, Alicante began to recover after the disasters of recent wars, but it was really in the 19th century when it started to expand considerably. With the arrival of the railway in 1858, its linkage to the centre of the peninsula guaranteed its leading role as a port, giving it the cosmopolitan air of a city facing the sea and welcoming maritime traffic.
Today, Alicante is the second largest city in the Land of Valencia with a population of 261.255 (1991), a central location on the Costa Blanca, and now deriving much of its income from the tourist industry.
Culture
The City offers an interesting range of cultural activities taking place in various centres around town, such as the Casa de la Cultura (cultural centre), which has a well-stocked library, a historical archive and keeps locals and visitors abreast of cultural movements by staging expositipns, conferences and films.
A number of financial entities also have their own Cultural Centres, offering a diversified programme throughout the year. The Teatro Principal, a neo-classical building of the middle 19th century, with an extensive programme, the exhibition centre Lonja del Pescado...

Today it houses a 20th Century Art Collection donated to the city in 1976 by the artist Eusebio Sempere. The nucleus of the collection is composed of works by major artists belonging to the Spanish generation of the fifties: Alfaro, Canogar, Chillida, Mompó, Saura, Tàpies, Zobel and Viola, and also includes a few predecessors of avant-garde art such as Gris, Miró, Picasso, etc.
Provincial Archeological Museum
This is located within the Palace of the Provincial Council and has such a large collection of archeological remains that only a selection of the most significant pieces are actually on display for the public. There is also a valuable collection of popular ceramics from the 1 6th to the 1 9th centuries.
Museum of the Bonfires
This museum is located inside the Santa Bárbara castle and contains effigies saved from the flames of the popular Las Hogueras festivities of Alicante.
Parks and Gardens
Alicante looks towards the sea, and does so from its famous Paseo de la Explanada, one of the most beautiful seafront promenades in Spain.
"To be in Alicante is to be on the Explanada" wrote Juan Gil-Albert, and there is nothing as pleasant as strolling along this quayside promenade lined by four rows of palms, tessellated with marble in Alicante red, cream and black in imitation of the neighbouring waves of the Mediterranean.
Along the Explanada there is a music pavilion where the Municipal Band gives concerts on feast days. Other parks in the city are the Canalejas, with an important display of giant f chus; el Palmeral, located on the seafront along the Murcia road; Lo Morant, with an auditorium: and el Benacantil, with extensive pine groves on the slopes of the Santa Bárbara castle.
Conclusion
Alicante's exceptional location between the mountains and the sea provides the city with a special kind of enrapturing beauty. The city, wherever one roams, is encompassed with the savour of the sea, playing its deeply felt role as a seaport, as it has always done.
