Albany is situated in the southwest part of the state of Georgia. It is the county seat of Dougherty, Georgia, US and obtained its charter in 1838.

Albany became a rail centre by the turn of the nineteenth century. It is located 183 miles southwest from Atlanta and 80 miles northwest of Tallahassee. It has an estimated population of 164,070.
