Abingdon
Abingdon is situated in Washington County, Virginia. It is the county seat of Washington County. It lies 214 km southwest of Roanoke. It is stated in the census 2000 that this town has a population of around 8000 people.
It forms a part of the "Tri-Cities" region sharing a place with Kingsport-Bristol (TN)-Bristol (VA) Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is a town rich in history and tradition.
This town has a total area of 8.3 square miles, all of it being land, according to the US Census Board. Abingdon is situated in the Great Appalachian Valley, between the North Fork and the Middle Fork of the Holston River.
This town comprises people 95% white, 3.41% African American, .13% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 0.80% Hispanic/Latino and 0.19% from other races. Abingdon has approximately 3,522 houses and 2100 families residing here.

The William King Regional Arts Centre and the Barter Theatres" are main venues for cultural events here in Abingdon. The Barter Theatre is called the "State Theatre of Virginia" and is one of the oldest and longest running theatres in the United States.
The William King Regional Arts Theatre, built in 1913, is the only theatre which caters from southwest Virginia to northeast Tennessee.
Formerly it was a school which was renovated into an arts centre which houses galleries of regional and international art. This encompasses contemporary, modern works and historic and decorative art too.
The Fields-Penn 1860 House Museum, also located in Abingdon, displays how a typical middle class family lived in the pre civil war period.
Apparently, James Field had built his home in 1860 for his family comprising eight children and his wife. The Penn family later moved into the house in the 1890s and lived there for a good 75 years; thus the Fields-Penn House.
Abingdon is also one of the towns along "The Crooked Road"- Virginia"s music trail and is the venue for the annual Virginia Highlands Festival being one of the most famous and anticipated events in Virginia.
Abingdon also has a cave house craft shop in a Victorian landmark, an arts depot, an 1870 restored railroad station. A few hotels situated in Abingdon are the Martha Washington Inn, a Four Star and the historic hotel of America built in 1932.
