Details of Aberystwyth and the Ticket Luck value
Aberystwyth
The town of Aberystwyth has been defined as "A nostalgic yearning which is in itself more pleasant than the thing being yearned" ((Douglas Adams & John Lloyd).
This place gets its name from its location on the mouth of the river Ystwyth. This town is the prime holiday resort and educational centre of the west coast of Wales. It accommodates the University Wales Aberystwyth and the National Library.
Surrounding the town are three hills, two beaches and a number of castle ruins, a pier and a harbor. It is colloquially known as Aber. Once climbed, the monument to Wellington up on the hills may offer breathtaking scenes of cardigan bay.
This town has a permanent population of approximately 12,000 people. However, the University accommodates around 7000 resident students at the Aberystwyth University taking the total number of people to 19,500.
On a clear day, one may see the tallest mountains in Wales, Snowdon. Most of the Victorian/Edwardian seafront buildings are 4 to 5 storey"s high. The wide boardwalk keeps the tides of the sea away from these buildings. It also serves as a comfortable place to sit, sun bathe and view the snow covered mountains and hills that surround Aberystwyth.
Geographically speaking, Aberystwyth may be thought of as isolated from the rest of Wales. This, as a result, has made the residents of this town more self sufficient and resourceful for themselves - more than any other town of this size would have.
Aberystwyth is now visited by tourists from all over and in return, the town serves them with a number of various forms of food, including Chinese, Italian, Indian and Mediterranean.
Aberystwyth has a pier and large sea front which extends from Constitution Hill (north end) to the mouth of the harbor (south end). Now, it is made up of four different areas: Waunfaur, Llanbadarm Fawr, Aberystwyth town and Penparcau; the last being the most populated. The sea and the Gulf Stream maneuver the local weather which is usually warm and welcomes tourists.
The Aberystwyth Electric Cliff Rail is the longest in Britain. It starts from Constitution Hill and works its way up to the summit.. Trains run every few minutes during the spring, summer and early autumn.
On reaching the top, especially on a clear day, one may view as far as the Preseli Hills in Pembrokeshire (to the south), and Cardigan Bay (to the west) and the Snowdonia mountains can also be seen (to the north). One may also start a walk over the cliff-tops to Clarach Bay from where one can catch a bus back to Aberystwyth
Some main attractions in this town include the Cliff railway, a camera obscura (on constitution hill), the castle ruins, the Vale of Rheidol Steam Railway, Aberystwyth Arts Center and the Ceredigon Museum.Leisure and sports facilities include a golf course, a marina, the Commodore cinema and the Ystwyth Trail Cycle Path.
Aberystwyth has a live music scene which has given rise to stars such as The Crocketts, Hot Puppies, Murry the Hump and Radio Luxembourg.
The two main languages spoken in this town are English and Welsh. In a census report issued in 2001, it was shown that 39% of the residents identified themselves as either being able to speak, read or write Welsh.
Aberystwyth has a number of sporting associations including Aberystwyth Athletic Club formed in 1955. It also has a local rugby union named Aberystwyth RFC. This plays in Welsh rugby leagues. Aberystwyth Town F. C. won The Welsh Cup in 1900.
Most of this town"s economy revolves around alcohol, tourism, education, repairing broken shop windows, and retail. Unlike other small sea side towns, Aberystwyth businesses stay open all year round.
Another very interesting fact about this town is that with over 6,000,000 books (5,000,000 in the National Library and over 1,000,000 in the University library), Aberystwyth is said to have the highest ration of books to people in the world, which is 300 books for every person!
