Frank Baum. It was adapted to the stage by Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the music and lyrics, while the book was written by Winnie Holzman.

The show has been highly rated ever since its debut over a decade ago. It has managed to win seven Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Critics Circle Awards, twenty three Broadway.com Audience Awards, a Grammy Award and three Tony Awards. It has managed to gross over two and a half billion dollars around the globe and is among the top ten highest seat selling shows in Broadway history.
