Wake Forest University’s sports teams were originally known as the ‘Fighting Baptists’. This name changed in 1923 when a news reporter described their convincing win against their rivals, the Blue Devils of the Duke University, as fighting like demons. On the basis of their performance, they have been considered among ‘The Big Four’ or ‘Tobacco Road’ which include North Carolina State, Duke University and North Carolina. The Deacons are also members of the Atlantic Coast Conference and take part in Division I of NCAA.
