The Weeknd is an Ontario-born R&B singer who began recording music in 2010. Originally named Abel Tesfaye, the singer adopted the stage name, the Weeknd at the age of 17 when he dropped out of school. He slightly modified the spellings of weekend as there was already a Canadian band with the same name. In 2010, Tesfaye met record producer Jeremy Rose and together they came up with the idea of a dark R&B project and released three singles, 'Loft Music', 'What You Need' and 'The Morning'. These tracks captured the attention of rapper, Drake who helped him gain coverage from media outlets such as The New York Times and Pitchfork Media.

Before the Weeknd released his debut studio album in 2013, he came out with 4 EP albums between 2009 and 2011. These EP albums consisted of fan favorites 'Wicked Games', 'Echoes of Silence' and 'Lonely Star'. The Weeknd's debut studio record, 'Kiss Land' reached second place in the US and Canada, selling over 270,000 copies in America and reaching gold status in Canada.
