The Tragically Hip
The Tragically Hip are a Canadian rock band from Kingston, Ontario. The band consists of Gordon Downie (lead vocals and occasional acoustic guitar), Paul Langlois (guitar), Rob Baker (guitar), Gord Sinclair (bass) and Johnny Fay (drums). The band has earned great popularity in Canada. Their successes have made them very influential in Canada The band has the honor of being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2005.

History
The Tragically Hip was formed in 1983. The band is often referred to simply as The Hip. The name of the band was taken from a skit in the movie Elephant Parts by Michael Nesmith of The Monkees.

1987 proved to be a lucky year for the band when MCA former company president Bruce Dickinson saw them perform live at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, Ontario. He was impressed with their performance. Eventually, the band was successful in signing a long-term record deal with MCA.

Later that year, the band released the eponymous EP The Tragically Hip.It proved to be a huge success and established them as one of the best and most influential bands in Canada.

The Another Roadside Attraction festival was created by them in 1992. The festival tours Canada to promote Canadian bands.

The band are also known for their often improvisational renditions of songs in addition to their energetic live performances. Lead singer Gordon Downie often strays from the lyrical path to rant to the audience or wander off into fictitious monologues and conversations. Some of these become lyrics for future songs. The "killerwhaletank" version of "New Orleans is Sinking" is the most famous live monologue. It was recorded at The Roxy Theatre, LA. May 3, 1991. This version was released on CD in 1996 as the B-side to "Grace, Too". The "Police Frogman" version of "New Orleans is Sinking" and the "Greek Porter" version of "Highway Girl" are other notable monologues.

The band has earned immense popularity in Canada. However, mainstream success was not achieved by them in the United States. Their appearance on Saturday Night Live with fellow Canadian and friend Dan Aykroyd guest starring, and with John Goodman hosting is their most-seen appearance in the United States. They appeared on the show on March 25, 1995.

At Woodstock '99 held in Rome, New York in 1999, the Hip were one of the featured bands. They typically play to sold-out arenas when they are touring in Canada. However, they play smaller venues and clubs, or festivals while touring in the United States. Canadian expatriates love to attend and enjoy their performances abroad. The recordings of their performances are permitted by the band. The tone and content of much of their music is a paean to the Canadian experience. It touches on such themes as small-town life, geography, Canadian history and hockey.

Even though The Tragically Hip have not earned much recognition in the United States, their live album, Live Between Us, was recorded at Cobo Arena in Detroit, Michigan in 1996 in support of the album Trouble at the Henhouse. A powerful version of "New Orleans is Sinking" and a heavily improvised "Grace, Too," are standout tracks from the album.

The band's seventh full-length album, Phantom Power was released in 1998. Many fan-favorite songs such as "Poets", "Bobcaygeon", and "Fireworks" are included in the album.

In 1996, their song "Butts Wigglin" was contributed to the soundtrack to the movie Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy. The song originally appeared on the Trouble at the Henhouse album. Two songs, "It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken", and "Poets" were performed by the Tragically Hip as part of a command performance for Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom on October 10, 2002.A cover of "Black Day in July" was performed by the band in 2002. The song is about the 1967 12th Street Riot in Detroit, on Beautiful: A Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot.

The Tragically Hip were successful in releasing their tenth full-length album, In Between Evolution in 2004. After the more experimental tone of their last two records, Music @ Work (released in 2000) and In Violet Light (2002), the record was considered a return to their classic sound by many fans. The Hip headlined "Across the Causeway" on the grounds of Royal Military College in Kingston on September 12, 2004.

The Tragically Hip were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the 2005 Juno Awards On April 3, 2005.
