The Ellie Caulkins Opera House located in Denver Performing Arts Complex will celebrate the Christmas season by holding a number of shows of the popular Christmas ballet, the Nutcracker. The two act ballet that has been adopted from E.T.A. Hoffman's tale of 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King', and will be recreated by Colorado Ballet. With scenery and dazzling costumes designed by Jose Varona, the seasonal tradition will be completed with the use of Tchaikovsky's original arrangement.

 

The premiere show of the Nutcracker was held at the Mariinsky Theatre located in St. Petersburg in 1892. With choreography by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky took upon himself to compose the ballet's score. Since then, countless productions of the Nutcracker have been staged all over the world. In 2012, the San Francisco Examiner concluded that 40 percent of ballet revenues in America are generated from 'the Nutcracker' productions.

 

The story of the ballet revolves around a young German girl, Clara and her wooden nutcracker who journey together to magical worlds. Clara's dream takes them to the Mouse King territory, Land of Sweets and the Pine Forest. The Nutcracker concludes with a joyous celebration and dances. Dance styles from Arabia, Russia, China and Spain are performed live.
