History
The Book of Mormon is written by Matt Stone, Trey Parker and Robert Lopez, who became friends while studying at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Before forming this production, the trio worked together on a music film during college. Named 'Cannibal! The Musical', this was Matt, Trey and Robert's first experience conceiving musicals. Their works also include the Emmy winning adult animated series, 'South Park' and the Academy Award nominated film, 'South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut' released in 1993 and 1997, respectively.
Development & Premiere
Before they began working on the Book of Mormon, their 1998 feature film, 'Orgazmo' and an episode from South Park, 'All About Mormons', included comical elements from Mormonism. It was in 2003 that the three aspiring directors began developing the story for the Book of Mormon. After nearly 7 years, the Book of Mormon made its debut on Broadway on 24th March, 2011. Initially named, the Book Mormon: The Musical of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the name was later on shortened to the Book of Mormon.
The Book of Mormon on Tour
With over 4 revival productions initiated since 2011, the Book of Mormon is currently running shows on Broadway, in London as well as in Melbourne. The comical tale of two young Mormon missionaries and their struggle during preaching their religion has won a Grammy Award, 4 Outer Critics Circle Awards, 5 Drama Desk Awards and 9 Tony Awards.
