Randy Travis is an American country music superstar who is regarded as one of the most influential figures of Neotraditional Country music. He was born Randy Bruce Traywick on May 4, 1959 in Marshville, North Carolina. In the late 1980's, Randy was one of the leaders of the new traditionalist movement in country music. To date he was had 22 number one hits, 6 number one albums, 5 Grammy's, 6 CMA's, 9 ACM's, 10 AMA's, 6 Dove Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of fame.

The Early Days
Randy Bruce Traywick was the second of six children. His father, Harold, ran a construction business in addition to raising turkeys and breeding horses while his mother worked in a textile plant. Randy received a great deal of encouragement from his father who wanted him to become a country singer, and introduced him to the likes of Hank Williams and Stonewall Jackson at an early age. Due to his father's desire to see Randy and his children as country music stars, Randy alongside three of his brothers formed a band called the Traywick Brothers, that their father helped promote locally. At the age of just ten years, Randy and his brother Ricky, already had their own duo, playing throughout the South at fiddler's conventions, private parties, VFW halls and anywhere they could draw a crowd. From an early age Randy's powerful voice startled audiences and he quickly became a local star. Eventually Randy dropped out of school in the ninth grade, and became increasingly pre-occupied with drinking and drugs which landed him in a series of scrapes with the law.

At age 16, Randy's mature singing and performing abilities won him first place in a talent contest hosted by Country City USA in which he performed as a soloist. After that there was no looking back and Randy was immediately invited to play regularly at the famed night spot by the club owner, Lib Hatcher. This stint lasted almost five years and Hatcher eventually became Randy's manager in the late 70s. With Hatcher's help Randy recorded two singles for Paula Records, "Dreamin'" and "She's My Woman" with Joe Stampley producing.

In 1981 Randy decided to move to Nashville, but continued commuting regularly to Charlotte to perform at Country City, USA. He spent most of his time writing songs and getting acquainted with the Nashville scene. He also started working at a new club called The Nashville Palace, where he cooked catfish and washed dishes, in between singinon stage. This club was also under the management of Hatcher. In a short period of time the young singer gained popularity in Nashville and adopted the stage name Randy Ray. Randy recorded his first album independently while still working at the club and called it, "Randy Ray-Live at the Nashville Palace." The album was mostly sold at the club between shows and is now a collector's item and out of circulation.

Randy's Rise to Stardom
Despite his talent and popularity, Randy was turned down by every record label in Nashville several times, but eventually landed a deal with Warner Brothers Records in 1985. Record company executives changed his name to Travis, and recorded his first single "Prairie Rose," which was used in the soundtrack of the film, "Rustler's Rhapsody." In 1986, Randy released his album titled "Storms of Life" and the rest is country music history. His most popular hit singles included "On the Other Hand," and "1982" establishing Randy as a singer and performer to the likes of George Jones, Lefty Frizell and Merle Haggard. The success of these singles led to wide-spread demand for live shows and Randy began touring across the United States and Canada performing before record-setting crowds.

His single, "Three Wooden Crosses," won the Christian Country Music Association's "Song of the Year" award and the 2026 CMA Award for "Song of the Year". The single was also the only song from a Christian label to ever make the number one position on the country charts.

In 2026 Randy's album "Rise And Shine" won him a Grammy for "Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass, Gospel Album".
