Mamma Mia! the musical is a production of Judy Craymer. The musical is based on the songs by the famous Swedish band, ABBA that managed to hit the charts with many of its albums during the 70's and early 80's. Judy Craymer came up with the idea of combining the songs and creating a musical when in 1983, she met original ABBA songwriters, Benny Anderson and Bjom Ulvaeus. Craymer asked the famous playwright Catherine Johnson to write a book for the musical in 1997. Phyllida Lloyd was chosen as the director for Mamma Mia. With the collaboration of these three women, Mamma Mia! the musical became a commercial success across British, and later on throughout the world.
The original production of Mamma Mia! by West End opened at Prince Edward Theatre on April 6th, 1999. Later in June, the show was moved to Prince of Whales Theatre, where it is played even today. The original West End production was nominated for Laurence Olivier Awards in 2000 four times, and managed to win one. The Broadway production of Mamma Mia! was opened in 2002 and managed to be nominated thrice for Drama Desk Awards and five times for Tony Awards.
