The band was formed in 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida while the original band members were still in high school. The lineup of the band has since seen many changes over the years as tragedy and life in general got in the way.

The band lived through the tragedy of three of its original members dying in a plane crash in 1977 just as their 5^th album Street Survivors came out which later went on to become a 2x multi-platinum hit in the US. Lynyrd Skynyrd took a decade long breather during most of the 80s but came back strong with the album ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991’.
 
The band has given a steady stream of hit albums since their first 3xmulti-platinum Lynyrd Skynyrd  came out in 1973 .Their latest album God & Guns was released in 2009 in which the band has remained true to its bluesy rock sound but at the same time experimented with new ideas.
