The music, lyrics and the book of the musical are co-written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Prior to its off-Broadway premiere, the musical was originally performed at Kingston Mines Theatre in Chicago, and after re-working it, it was opened at the Eden Theatre in Manhattan on February 14, 1972. After attaining enough success and popularity, the musical then moved to Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre on June 7, 1972. The musical was eventually transferred to Royale Theatre five months after it was opened at Broadhurst theatre. The show kept on being staged at Royale for seven more years, and afterwards it was moved to Majestic Theatre. The original Broadway cast included Barry Bostwick, Carole Demas, Adrienne Barbeau and Walter Bobbie. The musical opened at London's West End Production in June 1973 at the New London Theatre. The musical also underwent several revival productions both at West End and at Broadway apart from other international productions. It was also adapted as Movie in 1978.
