Roots of the competition

The Gold Cup officially began in 1991 but its roots lie in the previously held CONCACAF Championship. That tournament was initiated in 1961 but it had to be scrapped in 1989 before being replaced by the current tournament. That Gold Cup has been part of the annual soccer calendar ever since.

 

Achievements and venues

The CONCACAF Gold Cup has been held on twelve previous occasions. Its thirteenth edition will be the first to be co-hosted by the US and Canada. The tournament has previously been held in the US alone, except on two occasions when it was co-hosted by Mexico.

 

The most successful team in the tournament's history is Mexico. Along with the US, they are the only country to have appeared in every edition and also hold the record for the most wins, with six. The US is second with five wins while Canada is third with one triumph to their name.
