The Huskies have been nipping at the sport of basketball from the onset of the 20th century. The Friars started preaching some basketball basic as the Roaring Twenties rolled in and haven't stopped since. The UConn Huskies vs. Providence Friars showdown is gearing up to be one fire and brimstone affair.
 
After basketball became a varsity sport at the University of Connecticut in 1903, the associated UConn Huskies basketball team started to lock its jaws on related championships left, right and center. The Providence Friars however took their time in building up steam and received an early blessing in the form of four New England championships during the late 1920s and 1930s.
 
This pack of Huskies had their pecking order dominated by the likes of Hugh Greer under whom they clinched a dozen Yankee Conference championships in then1950s and then half-a-dozen more under George Witton during the 1960s and 1970s. The Jim Calhoun era garnered the Huskies 7 Big East Conference championships and a trifecta of NCCA tournament titles. Though not having many titles in the championships department, the Providence Friars have nonetheless been diligently pursuing basketball, having made 15 NCCA Tournament appearances and made it twice into the final four, with a Big East Conference tournament title to boot.
